Buying a used excavator: what to look for
Updated on October 29, 2026
Mini, wheeled or tracked excavator: the condition of a few assemblies determines the follow-up costs. Clarify these points before you bid.
Undercarriage and tracks
On tracked excavators, the undercarriage is often the most expensive wear part. Check track tension, rollers, idlers and sprockets as well as cracks in the undercarriage. On wheeled excavators, tyres, axles and brakes matter.
Hydraulics, boom and slewing ring
- Check cylinders and hoses for leaks
- Play in pins and bushings on boom, arm and bucket
- Slewing ring: smooth rotation without jerks or noise
- Welds and repairs on the boom
Engine, operating hours and service
Operating hours alone say little if service records are missing. Ask for service records, oil change intervals and major repairs. A cold start reveals a lot about the engine.
Equipment and attachments
Quick coupler, tiltrotator, buckets and auxiliary hydraulics add considerable value. Check whether existing attachments fit your fleet.
