How to read operating hours
Updated on October 29, 2026
Operating hours are one of the most important details of a used machine. Read correctly, they help with the assessment – on their own, they say little.
What the meter measures
The hour meter usually records how long the engine or drive has run – not how hard the machine was worked. Idling counts just like full load.
Use and service matter more
A machine with many hours and a complete service history can be better than one with few hours from heavy use without records. So ask about the type of use, the service book and major repairs.
Check the meter for plausibility
- Does the wear (pedals, seat, pins, undercarriage) match the reading?
- Do service records and hours match in time?
- Was the meter or display replaced? Then ask for the old reading
