Buying a used forklift: checklist for businesses
Updated on October 29, 2026
A used forklift can be a good solution if it suits the job and is technically sound. Use this checklist to review listing and machine in a structured way.
Does the forklift suit the job?
Clarify beforehand which loads, lift heights and locations (indoors, outdoors, ramps) are involved. Electric forklifts suit warehouses best, combustion models rather outdoor use.
- Load capacity at the required lift height (mind the load centre)
- Mast height for doors and containers
- Tyre type: pneumatic, super-elastic or cushion tyres
Check the technology
- Mast and chains: play, wear, smooth lifting and lowering
- Hydraulics: leaks at cylinders and hoses
- Forks: cracks, wear at heel and tip
- Steering, brakes, lights and warning devices
- Battery: age, cell condition, matching charger
Ask for documents
Ask for the latest inspection record (in Germany under DGUV regulation 68), the service book and the operating manual. If documents are missing, plan for an inspection before first use.
